The Research Department of the Museum of Military History works in the field of new military history, which examines the multifaceted connections between the military and society from different perspectives and explores the experiences and consequences of war and armed conflict.

Current research addresses, among other topics:

• military health care in the Habsburg Monarchy
• the history of military chaplaincy
• the museum's own history
• everyday life under military occupation and foreign rule
• masculinities and the military
• war violence and its aftermath
• Austrian soldiers in the Wehrmacht
• resistance to Nazi rule by soldiers and police officers
• military justice and post-war justice
• visual discourses, politics of history and practices of remembrance

Provenance research on objects from contexts of injustice forms an important part of the department's remit. It is carried out in close consultation with the museum's collection departments and the Austrian Commission for Provenance Research.

The Research Department acts as the intellectual and theoretical driving force of the museum. Its staff are well connected internationally and contribute actively to public and academic debate through academic events and publications. Working closely with the museum's curators and exhibition managers, the department opens up new lines of enquiry and strengthens object-centred and museological research as well as museum education.
